HISTORIA DE LA CUMBIA

La palabra cumbia comparte la misma raíz lingüística que el vocablo cumbé, una danza de la Guinea Ecuatorial, según la RAE.  La cumbia es uno de los géneros más antiguos, sus orígenes se remontan a los bailes africanos que llevaron los esclavos negros a Latinoamérica, éstos serían el cumbé y danza bantú de Guinea Ecuatorial,  estos ritmos se mezclaron con la música autóctona indígena, dando lugar a diferentes tipos de cumbias. 

El origen de la cumbia tiene la aportación de tres culturas: indígena, negra y española. En la instrumentación se aprecia un conjunto de tambores: llamador, alegre, tambora, la flauta de millo, o las gaitas (macho y hembra, que son flautas grandes), y las maracas y el guache. Los cantos y las coplas tienen su origen en la poética española, y cuando llega al norte de Colombia evolucionó y dio lugar a la cumbia Colombiana

A partir de la década de los 40, la cumbia Colombiana se extendió a América Latina volviéndose tan popular que rápidamente surgieron variantes como la cumbia argentina, cumbia mexicana, cumbia chilena, etc. En ésta década México era considerado uno de los países con las mejores orquestas, unas de las máximas figuras eran los cubanos Benny Moré y Pérez Prado, pero fue la llegada de Luis Carlos Meyer, el embajador de la cumbia Colombiana, que éste ritmo comenzara a sonar y a evolucionar al grado de que, como dijo el cronista mexicano Carlos Monsiváis, “la cumbia se nacionalizó mexicana”

En los años 50 comienza su carrera Mike Laure, compositor y arreglista,  convirtiéndose en una de las grandes estrellas, Mike Laure y sus cometas tocaban en todos los círculos sociales, teniéndo mucho auge en los salones de baile más famosos de la Ciudad de México como el Salón los Ángeles y el California Dancing Club.

La cumbia es parte de la cultura musical de México, tanto así que han surgido subgéneros como la cumbia grupera, cumbia tropical, technocumbia, cumbia sonidera, cholocumbia o cumbia wepa, cumbia texana, cumbia andina mexicana y cumbia norteña.
